Bigha to acre, hectare, square feet: how to convert
Worked examples for the most common bigha conversions — for every state where the unit is used.
Last updated: 19 May 2026
Bigha is a customary unit, not a standardised one. Before you can convert it to anything else, you need to know which bigha you are working with — the value differs significantly by state. Once you have that, conversion is just multiplication.
This guide gives you the formula, the per-state values, and worked examples for the conversions buyers most often need.
The conversion formula
Every conversion routes through square feet (sqft) as the anchor unit. So:
- Bigha → sqft = bigha-count × your-state-bigha-in-sqft
- Bigha → sqm = (bigha × state-bigha-sqft) ÷ 10.7639
- Bigha → acre = (bigha × state-bigha-sqft) ÷ 43,560
- Bigha → hectare = (bigha × state-bigha-sqft) ÷ 107,639
State-specific bigha values
- Madhya Pradesh — 27,225 sqft
- Uttar Pradesh — 27,000 sqft (pucca)
- Bihar — 27,220 sqft
- Rajasthan — 27,225 sqft (pucca)
- Gujarat — 17,427 sqft
- West Bengal — 14,400 sqft
- Assam — 14,400 sqft

Worked examples
1 bigha in Madhya Pradesh
- = 27,225 sqft
- = 27,225 ÷ 10.7639 ≈ 2,529 sqm
- = 27,225 ÷ 43,560 ≈ 0.625 acre (5/8 of an acre)
- = 27,225 ÷ 107,639 ≈ 0.253 hectare
2 bigha in Uttar Pradesh
- = 2 × 27,000 = 54,000 sqft
- = 54,000 ÷ 10.7639 ≈ 5,016 sqm
- = 54,000 ÷ 43,560 ≈ 1.24 acre
5 bigha in West Bengal
- = 5 × 14,400 = 72,000 sqft
- = 72,000 ÷ 43,560 ≈ 1.65 acre
- = 72,000 ÷ 107,639 ≈ 0.669 hectare
Notice that 5 bigha in West Bengal (1.65 acre) is smaller than 2 bigha in UP (1.24 acre) is — wait, the other way: 5 WB bigha equals roughly 1.65 acre, only slightly more than the 2 UP bigha at 1.24 acre. WB bigha is much smaller than UP bigha, so 5 of the WB ones is only about a third more land than 2 of the UP ones. This is exactly the kind of confusion the calculator below removes.
1 acre in MP
Going the other way: 1 acre = 43,560 sqft. Divided by MP bigha (27,225 sqft): 1.6 MP bigha per acre. So a 2.5-acre farm in MP is 4 bigha.
Reverse conversions
If your input is in sqft / sqm / acre / hectare and you want bigha:
- sqft → bigha = sqft ÷ your-state-bigha-in-sqft
- acre → bigha = (acre × 43,560) ÷ your-state-bigha-in-sqft
- hectare → bigha = (hectare × 107,639) ÷ your-state-bigha-in-sqft
Skip the math
The Settelo Plot Area Converter handles all of this — pick your state, pick your unit, type the value, and it shows you the equivalent in sqft, sqm, gaj, acre, and hectare simultaneously.
